RePlay: one of 15 finalists of global Changemakers contest, "No Private Matter! Ending Abuse in Intimate & Family Relations", out of 243 entries from 46 countries

RePlay tells the story of two friends searching for their good friend Zoe. They have just heard sexist, stereotyping rumors about Zoe that lead them to conclude that she is caught up in an abusive relationship. On their search, the friends navigate through their neighborhood and are challenged with mini-games that encourage them to work together and be respectful, confident communicators. Success in these mini-games helps strengthen the two characters’ resiliency and better equip them to support Zoe once they find her. RePlay was developed in partnership between the Metropolitan Action Committee on Violence Against Women and Children (METRAC) and Take Action Games. Take Action Games is a game developer well known for creating the popular online game, Darfur is Dying.

About the RePlay Project

The RePlay Positive Video Game Project is an initiative of METRAC, launched in September 2005. Its goal is to promote healthy, equal relationships amongst youth aged 8 to 14 through a casual online video game that challenges gender-based violence. Accessible written resources for educators, parents, and youth have been created as tools to accompany the videogame.

A literature review of best practices for video game design was completed and multiple focus groups were held with over 250 diverse youth aged 8 to 14 throughout the Province of Ontario. Youth communicated their game playing behaviours, ideas, and preferences, and this information was used to develop the game’s design. An Interdisciplinary Advisory Committee of diverse stakeholders, including educators and school board members, experts in technology and communications, community organizations, and child and youth workers, provided feedback and guidance for all stages of the project.

The RePlay Project was funded by the Ontario Women’s Directorate (Government of Ontario) and is one of many products designed as an integrated package of resources for the education and youth sectors through a partnership with METRAC, White Ribbon Campaign, Springtide Resources, and the Centre for Research and Education on Violence Against Women and Children.
